When it comes to gifts, the human connection created when working with our hands is the perfect way to touch the heart. Creativity can be arts and crafts related and it also relates to other aspects of life, like food and gardening. In a time when we can’t always visit in person, here are a few creative ways to enjoy Mom’s Day.
Have a make-your-own pizza party.
DIY pizza: It’s a craft (depending on how artfully you place the toppings), an activity and a meal all at once! Start with basic pizza dough, then everyone gets to add their favourite toppings. Often Nya and I would make them with Pitas and they were amazing! You can do this in person with little ones or virtually via zoom and then snap pics to share your creation!
Spruce up the garden.
Gardeners know that Mother’s Day is the perfect time to start planting seeds. If you’re going to garden with Mom from a distance, send seed packs or bulbs instead of cut flowers. If you’re in the same home, get the whole family outside and digging in the dirt together. Some flowers that are fairly easy to maintain include sunflowers, marigolds and sweet peas. If you’re distancing, show up, do Mom’s yardwork and surprise her!
Bake dessert.
Mother’s Day wouldn’t be complete without something sweet. If your mom loves to bake, whip something up together, take a zoom cooking class or send some treats!
Take a painting class.
Make Mom a playlist.
I’m not so sure what my 19 year old would add to my playlist…I’m envisioning lots of bad language…but I’d love a playlist. Better than a playlist, I would love help figuring out how to play songs from my Iphone…so maybe the headline here should be titled, “Iphone Training”!!!
Serve breakfast in bed.
More like brunch in bed — let Mom sleep in, then enjoy a home made breakfast. Don’t forget the coffee and/or mimosas! If you’re distancing, drop the meal off at Mom’s doorstep and blow a few kisses through the door!
Here are a few more ideas:
Treat Yourself.
Mother’s Day is about more than one specific person. It is about celebrating Motherhood. Remembering those that passed if you have lost a love one or celebrating those that cared for you or that you have cared for in some way.
Virtual tea party
Virtual cocktails and brunch
Flower arranging class
Backyard picnic
Online concert, theatre or movie
For us Mom’s a simple phone call telling us you love us and miss us, will do the trick!
