Synthetic brushes have become a staple for artists of all levels. They’re versatile, durable, and designed to mimic the performance of natural hair while often being easier to care for. But even the best synthetic brushes need regular cleaning to stay in top shape. Proper care will keep your brushes springy, responsive, and ready for your next creative session.
Why Cleaning Matters
Every time you use a brush, paint works its way into the filaments. If left to dry, the paint can harden, causing your brush to lose its shape and snap. Over time, this can shorten the life of the brush dramatically. A few minutes of care after each painting session is the best investment you can make in your tools.
Step 1: Rinse Immediately
As soon as you finish painting, rinse your brushes under lukewarm running water. Avoid hot water, which can damage the synthetic filaments or loosen the ferrule (the metal part that holds the bristles).
•For water-based paints (watercolour, gouache, acrylic): rinse until the water runs clear.
•For oils: wipe out excess paint with a rag or paper towel, then use a brush cleaner or mild solvent before rinsing.
Step 2: Use Gentle Soap
Once most of the paint is out, lather the brush with a gentle brush soap or mild dish soap. Work the soap into the bristles in the palm of your hand, moving the brush in circular motions. This breaks down leftover pigment and restores softness.
Pro tip: Specialized brush soaps often include conditioners to keep synthetic filaments flexible and resilient.
Pro tip: Do not use abrasive brush cleaners as it damages the bristles.
Step 3: Rinse and Repeat
Rinse thoroughly again under lukewarm water. Repeat the soaping process if you still see pigment coming out. The goal is for the water to run completely clear.
Step 4: Reshape the Brush
After rinsing, gently press out excess water with a soft cloth or paper towel. Then reshape the brush head with your fingers, coaxing it back to its original form. This step is key for maintaining precise tips and edges.
Step 5: Dry Flat
Never store brushes upright while they’re wet — water can seep into the ferrule and cause loosening or mildew. Instead, lay brushes flat on a towel to dry. For extra care, place them slightly tilted downward so water flows away from the ferrule.
Extra Care Tips
- Deep clean your brushes weekly if you paint daily.
- Avoid harsh scrubbing or bending the bristles against the bottom of the sink.
- Store brushes horizontally or upright only once fully dry.
- For travel, use a breathable brush case — never seal damp brushes in airtight containers.
