General Painting Queries

The most important thing is to pick up a brush and start!!! I'd suggest checking out some of our free tutorials to see the different techniques and styles.

You will find on our courses page many beginner classes.

For Water Mixable Oil: Begin with "Beginner Birds & Flowers". It has 7 great projects and is a great price point with exceptional value.

For Watercolor: You can begin with either, "Watercolor Flowers" or "Birds & Botanicals".

For Acrylic: "Beautiful birds & Flowers" is a great course.

Once a brush has been used for a particular medium, we do not suggest you switch it to a new one. The original medium will be within the brushes and may setting to some degree in the ferrule and if a different medium is introduced it may cause the brush to separate.

I would love to see you experience all three mediums as everyone has their preference.

Water Mixable Oil, acrylic and watercolor have vastly different looks. They are all beautiful and fun to work with in different ways. I love water mixable oil for it's forgiving nature, time to blend and ability to create realistic results with ease. I find water mixable oil easier to work with than acrylic, especially for new painters.

I love watercolor for its transparency and flowing nature. You can layer blend and do many things.

Acrylic dries much faster than an oil based medium and is great for many techniques in layering and glazing.

I love water mixable oil paint because I don't require any toxic solvents while painting. The color is rich and creamy and forgiving, allowing time to blend and play. An oil is a great way to start due to how forgiving it is. You can easily wipe away a mistake and simply try again! I prefer solvent free/water mixable as I don’t like to use turpentine. The other benefit to Cobra is the fact it is virtually odourless.
